One of the oldest and best sources for news regarding Linux powered devices, LinuxDevices, is worryingly silent today. Attempts to reach both the main page and the forums return database errors. This comes a few months after its publisher, Ziff Davis Enterprise, was acquired by QuinStreet.

One of the oldest and best sources for news regarding Linux powered devices, LinuxDevices, is worryingly silent today. Attempts to reach both the main page and the forums return database errors. This comes a few months after its publisher, Ziff Davis Enterprise, was acquired by QuinStreet.

Signs Of Trouble

On February 3rd, a message was posted on the main page of LinuxDevices explaining how the future of the site was uncertain, and thanked its fans for being so loyal. Last week Jonathan Angel, the former editor of LinuxDevices (as well as WindowsforDevices.com and DesktopLinux.com) noted the message had been removed. A very similar message was left untouched on the still operating DesktopLinux.com:

The new owner is a giant marketing company, so expect to see both sites tarted up with zillions of intrusive ads and advertorial junk.

The site is up. It's being redirected to what appears to be a new domain, http://www.linuxfordevices.com/.

The URL has always been http://www.linuxfordevices.com/ , that's not new.

Thanks, TC. I've seen the title as 'Linux Devices', never noticed the "for" be-for. Why, no, officer, I've never done drugs.

Okay, if you say so. It was in my address book as http://www.linuxdevices.com/.

After doing a net search for linuxdevices.com, I see there are a few archived news stories under that domain. I'm not hallucinating, after all.

Sadly, I fear it may not have much value going forward from any URL. No new material in exactly how long?

Maybe I hallucinated it. But I used to post a lot of Linux Devices stories on LT, and I'm pretty sure it was linuxfordevices.com. At any rate I wish it had been adopted by good parents.

I believe TC to be correct. I recall it always being Linux For Devices.

Everyone is right.

LinuxDevices.com re-directs to LinuxforDevices.com, and has since before I surfed there for the first time some 7 some odd years ago now. The 'brand' is Linux For Devices like Tracy says, but for my part LinuxDevices .com rolls off the tongue a lot smoother than Linux-FOR-Devices .com.

Speaking of "Other News" redirects... The linux.org.uk link currently redirects to linux.com. Time, methinks, for a check with Alan Cox as to whether this state of affairs is permanent, and maybe some editing in said sidebar.

At some point they changed from http://linuxdevices.com to http://linuxfordevices.com. I have no idea why.
