Wireless NAS gadget dumps Windows for Linux

Iomega has switched its wireless network attached storage (NAS) system from Windows Storage Server 2003 to Linux, and dropped the price from $1,300 to $900. It has also reduced RAM from 256MB to 64MB, and added wireless access point capabilities and automated USB camera downloads, reports ExtremeTech in an in-depth review of the "StorCenter 1TB."

didn't know windows server 2003 cost only 500 bucks. How bout that price drop when eliminating vendor lock in and reducing cost to a fat zero.

You'd think the price would drop around 500 bucks...then people actually might spring for it. Until then, I'd say I can pass on this...afterall, I can get a dell poweredge for that price with more RAM and more computing power and install Linux/Samba on it and load it with drives. Then I can slap a wirless card in it for about 20 bucks and call it my NAS.

Pricetag? Right around 900 bucks. And I probably got an MS Windows License out of the deal as well. That and a subway token will get me on the subway.
