Sadly, the two really good programs the last time I looked were Fritz and Hiarcs, which are Windows based. Don't know if they will run under Wine. What you want to know is the rating. Anything under 2400 is a waste of time. eboard,apart from offering you this silliness about sending messages and picking outlandish board layouts, appears to be an interface to fairly weak engines.

What Linux needs (in chess) is a port of either Fritz or Hiarcs.

There is a positive health point to seriously playing chess against your computer: the intellectual exercise may stave off dementia. However, you could get the same result, perhaps more productively, by become an expert in AWK, which is what I am doing, or trying to do, in the absence of Fritz. It is certainly painful enough to be effective. Other people will probably have their own choice of some fundamentally mind torturing accomplishment....

Ballroom dancing is also said to be effective. Torture of a different sort?
