As an EFF supporter, you won't find me supporting any efforts to constrain the free flow of information. Nonetheless, you are misunderstanding Google's role.

Any revolutionary group (and Google's services are indeed revolutionary) has to adopt tactics that reflect the reality on the ground. To ignore reality is to run headlong into the bayonettes and martyr one's self on the altar of idealism. I'm all for idealism, but martyrdom should be the last resort. Google can not change the laws or government of China. To thumb their nose at the Chinese government would just mean more repression.

This is a smart move by Google. It at least gets them into the country and starts getting people used to the free flow of [some] ideas (unlike MSN search, which suppresses Linux hits everywhere!). It is up to the people of China to take it the rest of the way.
