That's what happened with SSH: when the commercial SSH got retrictive, the world routed around the restriction. If it becomes an issue, it can become a fork, since it's free/open-source, and then, unless there are patents involved, Oracle's ownership of the code will become as relevant as Caldera's.

That's fine for the long run. Unfortunately, retooling could become a serious problem.

I just read that MySQL got $16M cash infusing from Intel and someone else I forgot. If this acquisition by Oracle is squarely aimed at slowing down MySQL then they will probably have the smarts to fund the fork before the knowledge gets lost.
