You don't have to go through the full build process nicely described in the article. As it says in the mplayer README:

NOTE: If you run Debian you can configure, compile and build a proper Debian .deb package with only one command:

fakeroot debian/rules binary

The README goes on to explain how to pass custom options to 'configure'.

That should be enough choices: 1. 'apt-get' a pre-built package, or 2. build from source, or 3. build a package (lets you use the same package management tools you use for pre-builts, such as apt-get remove)
