vmware just sat on their prices until xen showed up and made its way into the kernel.

now all the sudden they start to give away stuff - I don't know maybe I am being paranoid but I vote xen - just because of the trust factor.

Actually, VMWare originally offered an fairly low cost version of their software for those wanting to run Windows under Linux. $39 from memory. I'm not sure when or why they dropped it, but I don't think it was available with Workstation 3.0.

yes they did - I was a consumer of that - still have the saved windows nt images and rpm's from it. - I believe you are right on the price $39.00 and it was called vmware express

but then they dropped it like a rock and offered upgrades to register users which I believe was 99.00 dollars - the real price was something in the 200 to 300 dollar range.
