Gee, and I was getting irritated that Slackware is still on the 2.4 kernel.

That is only a positive if it means that 2.4.x is in general less buggy than the 2.6.x series in it's current state.

Which is quite possible, as 2.4.x is in it's autumn years.

Slackware has had the 2.6 kernel in testing for ages, along with instructions for installing it. The 2.4 kernel is more stable than the 2.6, so Patrick ships it as the default.
