Didn't they also 'promise' to make dev kits available for people who ported all their Unix apps to NT back in the day? So people could just maintain one set of source code for both Unix and NT?

Then when people had their apps ported to NT, they decided not to do the dev kit so they were all stuck on NT?

Promises? Pfft.

Well, there are promises and there are promises.

If the promise is actually an irrevocable license to use patented technologies, it doesn't matter what Microsoft does down the road. It's pretty much like GPL'd software: If I release something under the GPL, I can release later versions under a proprietary license, but I can never "unrelease" the original software.

If Microsoft grants a license to use it's patented technologies in OpenXML, then they have no basis for a suit.
