can the fork be forked?

A lot of people have been calling PJ shrill and hysterical for calling this a fork. I like PJ- she does her homework and understands how to navigate the legal tarpits and minefields, unline certain "yes I love free software, but..." journalists like SJVN. She could be wrong about this. It seems to me there is a simple test- can the Novell translators and the Novell edition of OO be modified and freely re-distributed? If they can't because of licensing, patent encumbrances or other Microsoft sneakiness, then it's not only a fork, but a dead-end. The brouhaha over this whole deal is understandable. As far as I can see, PJ and Andy Updegrove are the only ones trying to find and analyze facts. |
