Most MMOGs go the GNU/Linux route (cost, ease/depth of tuning, low overhead, high performance, proven clustering). Even the very first 'traditional' MMOG, Ultima Online, went up on GNU/Linux back in 1996. I remember seeing posts beforehand from OSI (the developers of UO) on the eepro100 dev list asking for help with a 9 machine cluster and wondering what the heck the developers of Ultima could possibly want with a 9 machine cluster. :)
