A distro with xfce as the native desktop environment, sounds like a good one for machines without a lot of power to spare. OTOH, what I'd really like to see this year is a distro based on a *finished* e17...

I tried it a while back. Software installation and management was a joke. I did not find it to be user-friendly at all, particularly because the help was limited. Maybe it has improved. I have been using Debian Etch with xfce and believe it is just as fast on older machines, based on my experience. You also get to keep access to the Debian repositories and all the Debian resources.

Yeah, I've been meaning to try out etch, I guess I'll start downloading the media today.

Etch has been blazingly fast on my 450MHz boxes.

I have a 266 mhz box (384 mb ram), and Etch runs without much trouble if I avoid OOo.
