Or one of those kludges where you have a stripped-down real time OS that runs linux as a background task. Normal linux apps like mplayer or doom 3 don't benefit at all from the isolated real time OS running outside.

If it's honest to goodness native linux real time stuff, I'd like to see it in the main kernel tree - that would be a gamer's dream, and a boon to anyone doing music, multimedia, or just wanting a silky smooth and snappy desktop even under the heaviest loads.

Simply put, it would be the holy grail.
