I'd like to highlight this comment by Adriaan de Groot:

Consider the innate frugality of F/OSS systems when the donation of a single server makes headlines.

I prefer to read that as meaning that FOSS is efficient, but... ;)

As indeed it is. I have that lesson rammed home to me every work day, as I compare my Linux systems to what I have to use at work.
