MS Open Source most likely will be look but don't use. You can bet they will use licenses which limit the broad reusability of the code (Incompatible with GPL/Apache/MPL/BSD) or use licenses which let you examine the code, but not modify and redistribute. Open Source Linux-style is not in MS interest. Everything not in MS interest is not going to happen. Expect some heavy duty lip service. |

At the same time, it is somewhat fascinating how Microsoft's Ramji is so urgently attempting to win over Open Source developers at the present time. MS is currently - attempting to rapidly hasten adoption of its Silverlight - making its Windows Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008 more easily available to Open Source developers - heavily involving itself with this Summer's 2008 Open Source Convention (OSCON) [HYPERLINK@en.oreilly.com] One can see this MS-targeting of Open Source developers --- as part of its overall "Embrace" mantra --- through the current '{Open Source} Heroes' initiative. As this is written, the main URL for this particular initiative is [HYPERLINK@www.microsoft.com] and here is part of its description :
The first link on the very top of this {Open Source} Heroes site is a link to install Silverlight. On the far left area of the site are a list of Open Source "Heroes" developers with brief bios. Just below the list of MS "Hero" developers are the following three links: 'Getting Started', [HYPERLINK@www.microsoft.com] 'Order a Hero Hack Pack', [HYPERLINK@microsoft.order-7.com] 'Open Source at Microsoft', [HYPERLINK@www.microsoft.com] So one can readily discern even from this single {Open Source} Heroes initiative alone that Microsoft is ALREADY carrying out "heavy duty lip service". |

I'm confused... is that campaign targeted at children? The copy sounds like something one might read on a promotion for a new Happy Meal TM. |
