connect iPhone to computer via the usb cable, wait, respond to the prompt "Open with F-Spot ......", select the photos to download, and where to download them. click ok. Done.

The problem is doing anything else useful with it without the need to Pwn the damn thing.

Thanks for your reply. I hadn't tried F-Spot and it's good to know that also works. I'll admit that I don't really do much else with my phone in terms of syncing to my machine as my email is through imap on my own server and I still use a separate mp3 player.

[edit] I added a note to the article that this also works well with F-Spot and credited you. Thanks again :)
