This is why I run dovecot as an IMAP server. I am completely e-mail client agnostic. (And I even have squirrelmail set up so I can access my home e-mail from anywhere).

Contacts can be a problem although some clients allow the addressbook to be stored in an IMAP folder.

Better: Use LDAP for contacts. Throw in an CalDAV server (like CalendarServer or DAViCal) for good measure and you're all done!
