"The value proposition is pretty clear there, but the question is whether or not that value proposition is worth the extra money versus buying a less-expensive base laptop and loading the Linux distro of your choice."

The M3800 looks awesome, but there are other choices out there - http://www.LinuxLaptopDB.org

That there are. At this point in time, I honestly recommend picking up a cheap refurbished laptop and putting Linux on it.

Some of these are damaged in one way or another, but they make it clear when they are.

Play it again PC was recommended by someone else here (I forget who), and it's currently my first place to check for refurbished PC's. I used to use Cedar PC, but they went out of business.

And I see the https bug has shown up again. :(

I picked this up at a pawn shop yesterday, for only $279.

Dell Inspiron 5537 15.6" Laptop 4th-Gen Haswell Core i7 4500U CPU Intel HD 4400 Graphics 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Memory 1TB Hard Drive

Since it is all Intel chipsets, Linux runs great on it. Oh, and it lasts 8-9 hours on the battery.

Yep, You don't see deals like this very often. Pawnshops often don't know the real value of their PCs - they're just trying to get their money back with some profit on top. This laptop costs anywhere from $700-$1,000 everywhere else I've seen it for sale online. So, I was just offering the suggestion that pawnshops can be good places to shop around for newer discounted PCs and laptops that work well with Linux.
