First: Many ISPs block port 25. So, it's likely that you will not be able to perform Step #2.

Second: This will only work if there is no 'catchall' account configured... and even if there isn't one configured, the email server might be configured to silently drop unknown addressees.

So, it's possible that connecting directly to the SMTP will not yield any useful results.

Not just possible, but likely in my experience. The headline is also misleading. When you connect to port 25 on an email server you are in effect sending an email, whether you complete the email or not.
