It does appear that the Canadian Office Depot is a branch of the American one.

But I have no idea how closely the management of the USA and Canadian Office Depot chains are...

These stories pop up every 3 months or so, regarding (next big box PC reseller of your choice).

Bottom line is they all prey on ignorant consumers to sell unneeded warranties and services, and not just for PCs. Best Buy's Geek Squad is notorious for charging ridiculous amounts for their "services", as well as for extracting customers' personal data (nudie pics and videos) and sharing them on the internet.

It will always be up to the consumers to educate and protect themselves from these unscrupulous types. And we know that will never happen for most of the populace. They will want the government to fix it for them, so the government will keep regulating the good mom & pop stores into bankruptcy.

PC World sell HDMI cables from anywhere between £5 and £80. In most cases the £5 one will do. It isn't just services they upsell
