like so many tools, (puppet, nagios, etc) openstack grew because it was first to solve a problem for many. it will stay popular until it is replaced by better solutions that are easier to use. for example, puppet got replaced by salt and ansible. (for nagios i haven't seen an alternative yet, but it will emerge eventually)

if openstack is able to simplify or not remains to be seen, but for sure, like openstack became popular as an alternative to the original AWS, new Free Software tools will emerge that compete this the newer incarnations of these services, if openstack is not able to improve by itself.
