How fresh is the dew: ROSA 2012 Marathon?

Mandriva 2011 Hydrogen and ROSA 2012 Marathon are almost twins with indistinct differences. Is ROSA a new name for Mandriva Linux? This well may be. As long as the Mandriva company has less and less chance to survive, then company management may make a decision to move the development wholly to new pastures. Why not?

The Porteus Team: We consider ourselves a "Portable Linux Community"

I think it's fair to say that Porteus is optimized to run from a CD or USB flash drive, but it's also just as easy to install Porteus on a hard drive for use as a primary OS. In fact, it will probably boot and run even faster this way. One of our chief goals in developing Porteus is...

Installing Compiz on Xubuntu 12.04

I have been a fan of Compiz for a couple of years and I usually install it on each of my distro-hopping adventures. Somehow, it just doesn't seem right any more for a window to simply vanish,

13 surprises from Kubuntu 12.04

The system was relatively fast on my laptop with dual core Centrino 1.7 GHz and 1Gb of memory. I found no significant delays or unexpected waiting time. The system was solid. I faced no crashes during my Live run. Both these points say that Kubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin is good enough for Long-term support version. But, on the other hand, I found 13 suprises in this operating system during the Live run. And only two of them are...

Robert Milasan: Kongoni GNU/Linux aims to anybody who likes to experiment

Some Linux distribution are born to be big. Like Debian, Ubuntu and RedHat. Other Linux distributions are born to die, because only limited set of developers are self-interested in them. And there are distributions which are born to live small. They are changing maintaners and developers, but don't change the supporting idea. The example is Kongoni GNU/Linux. This is one of the few distributions born with an idea of freedom. This is one of the distributions approved by Free Software Foundation.

I want to call Ubuntu 12.04 "A Stairway to Heaven". Canonical is getting higher and higher on this stairway. Of course, current stair is far from the top. But it is higher than in versions 11.10 and 11.04.

SliTaz 4.0 was released in stable version on the 10th of April 2012. The ISO image grew in size a little bit since last time, but remained absolutely tiny - only 35 Mb. It means that you can download and burn it to your disk in no time.

Artyom Zorin on Zorin OS, the gateway to Linux for Windows users

Believe it or not, what actually attracted me most to Linux was the Compiz desktop effects software which I thought was “cool” when I first saw it on YouTube.

Six (plus one) ways to use Linux Live CDs in your business

There are basically two types of media which you can use as your Live Linux: CD/DVD or USB. Some distributions allow you to have Live USB, some only work from optical media. In both cases, some distributions allow you to save changes you’ve made. This feature is called “Persistence.” Here are the main ways in which Live Linux can help your business.

Can you imagine yourself in any of these situations? You sit in front of your computer, whether a laptop or desktop, look at the screen, move your mouse and … wait until the computer is ready to take your commands. But, the computer is too busy doing other operations to respond to your commands …

Danny Pop: Give me my Linux and computers back!

  • Linux notes from DarkDuck; By DarkDuck (Posted by darkduck on Apr 17, 2012 5:05 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Interview; Groups: Linux
Somewhere around 2002 I put my eyes on a "Linux special" edition of a popular computer magazine containing no less than 5 Mandrake installation CDs. I called in a geekier friend of mine and spent the whole afternoon reading the huge instructions leaflet and performing all the required steps. I was very, very excited and eager to explore the new possibilities. But...

You were once a newbie, standing wide-eyed at the base of a long, steep learning curve and wondering whether it would really be worth the enormous effort it would take to climb it. On the way, it wasn't always clear you'd ever get to where you wanted, but you kept at it and succeeded. Good for you! Now it's time to give others a hand up.

Unity, GNOME3, Windows 8 and… jumping rats

Years 2011 and 2012 brought, and will bring, significant changes to all of these operating systems. Maybe not on the core level, but certainly on the user interface level. Unity, GNOME3, and now Windows 8 user interface styles are... I won’t say they are bad or wrong. I will say they are different. Many people wrote on the Internet about their rants, excitement, pros and contras. I myself did not stand aside from that battle. I compared them both on early stages and running in the same Ubuntu system. But the war is far from being finished. It has just started. There will be more to come when the new Windows 8 eventually hits the shelves of computer stores. This wave promises to be much stronger than the Unity and GNOME3 ones.
