When dealing with files and folders on a system or even going through the contents of a file you will need to understand ‘Regular Expression’. ‘Regular Expression’ are characters used to define a pattern. The pattern can be used to search through a text file or listing files and folders.

Sometime instead of ‘Regular Expression’ you may see ‘regex’ or ‘regexp’.

For those who like a visually enhanced form of Linux then Ultimate Edition 5.4 is for you. The graphics are extremely nice compared to other versions of Linux I have seen.

NMAP OS Detection

Sometimes on a network it is beneficial to know the Operating System (OS) of a machine. Accessing a system is easier when you know the OS because you can specifically search the Internet for known security holes in the OS. Granted, security holes are usually patched quickly, but you need to know when a security hole exists.

Scanning your own network to detect the OS types can help you to see what a hacker will be able to see about your network.

LFCS sed Command

Another useful command for the Linux Foundation Certified SysAdmin (LFCS) is the 'sed' Command. The initials stand for 'Streaming EDitor'.

The 'sed' Command is an editor that edits the file as a stream. To stream a file is to pass it from another command using pipes (> or |) or load it directly into 'sed'.

Using hashcat to recover your passwords

Many people may have a user account on their system which they may not know the password to log in. Other passwords may also exist which can be recovered. This article will cover the use of Hashcat to find missing passwords. Of course, this process will not find every password, but it can help to attempt a recovery.

Installing Fedora 26 Beta on a MacBook Air

Since Fedora 26 Beta came out a few days ago, I decided it was a great time to throw it on my 13" MacBook Air.

A lot of people who like to use their Linux system for gaming. There seems to be no shortage of gaming systems which can supply access to games. UALinux is a Ukrainian company which promotes the use of GNU/Linux. UALinux has created a Ubuntu version to fill the gap for gaming. The Operating System (OS) is called Ubuntu GamePack and is based off of Ubuntu 16.04.

NMAP Ping Commands

If you have been following the NMAP articles I have written then you may have noticed something important about the scans. NMAP prefers to perform a Ping. A Ping to NMAP is a test to verify that the system to be scanned is really on-line and exists. If NMAP is to scan multiple systems on a subnet, or a whole subnet, then it will first test which systems are available to scan.

For those of you who may remember the puzzle game by Microsoft, as shown in Figure 1, you may be thinking “No way!”. The game will work in a round about way along with other classics from the time. The problem with Pandora’s Box is that Microsoft wrote the game specifically for the Pentium processor. Because of the specific code most people cannot play it anymore since Pentium systems are so obsolete. In this article you can run Pandora’s Box once again on nearly any newer system with Linux.
