eBay using Tux as a symbol for Internet fraud

eBay Australia has a fraud awareness page and a related flash game, both of which feature a depiction of a fraudster as a balding, bespectacled man with Tux, the Linux mascot, prominently displayed on his shirt. The big question is: why? Why such a gratuitous smear against the Linux community? Is it something we said?

Fortify Identifies Vulnerabilities in Open Source Software

Fortify Software announced that Fortify’s Security Research Group has identified a new class of security vulnerabilities, known as cross–build injection. These vulnerabilities, which Fortify discovered through its work with the Java Open Review (JOR) project, allow a hacker to insert code into the target program while it is being constructed.

Discontinuation of SUSE Linux 10.0

SUSE Security announces that SUSE Linux 10.0 will be discontinued soon. Having provided security-relevant fixes for more than two years, vulnerabilities found in SUSE Linux 10.0 after November 15th 2007 will not be fixed any more for this product. Expect the last updates around November 30th 2007.

Novell Boosts Linux Virtualization with VMware Support

Novell announced significant enhancements in the performance of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server when the Linux operating system is running as a virtual machine guest in a VMware environment. To deliver this improved performance, Novell modified the SUSE Linux Enterprise kernel to support the VMware Virtual Machine Interface (VMI), a communication mechanism between the guest operating system and hypervisor that simplifies the task of virtualization and makes Linux a more efficient guest operating system when running in VMware environments.

EVE Online to Linux

CCP Games, one of the world’s largest independent game developers, today announced a partnership with TransGaming Inc., a leading developer of software portability products for the electronic entertainment industry. Sourcefire Aquires ClamAV Project

Open source innovator and SNORT creator, Sourcefire, Inc., today announced that it has acquired ClamAV, a leading open source gateway anti-virus and anti-malware project. Sourcefire's first acquisition since its Initial Public Offering in March 2007, ClamAV will broaden the company's open source footprint while providing the technology foundation for new products and services that will extend the company's Enterprise Threat Management network security portfolio. Under terms of the transaction, Sourcefire has acquired the ClamAV project and related trademarks, as well as the copyrights held by the five principal members of the ClamAV team including project founder Tomasz Kojm. Sourcefire will also assume control of the open source ClamAV project including the ClamAV.org domain, web site and web site content and the ClamAV Sourceforge project page.

Gimp 2.4 RC Released

The first release candidate for Gimp 2.4 has been released. Among the many improvements in this upcoming version, new version of several of the most used tools and an improved interface with redesigned menus and new icons for tools.

Debian turns 14 today!

Debian, one of my long time favorite Linux distributions turned 14 today. Without the Debian project there would be no Ubuntu. Debian was begun in August 1993 by Ian Murdock, as a new distribution which would be made openly, in the spirit of Linux and GNU. Debian is pronounced /ˈde.bi.ən/. It comes from the names of the creator of Debian, Ian Murdock, and his wife, Debra. Happy 14th birthday Debian!

Microsoft and Xandros Expand Collaboration

Microsoft and Xandros announced a messaging protocol license and collaboration agreement that will enhance the interoperability of Scalix email servers with various mobile and personal computer-based email applications that utilize Microsoft email protocols. This agreement expands on the ongoing Microsoft-Xandros collaboration.

VMware Prices Initial Public Offering

VMware, Inc., kicked off an IPO of 33,000,000 shares for its Class A Common Stock priced at $29 per share. Shares began trading NYSE today under the ticker symbol "VMW". Citi, JPMorgan and Lehman Brothers acted as the representatives of the underwriters and, together with Credit Suisse, Merrill Lynch & Co. and Deutsche Bank Securities, acted as the joint book-running managers of the offering.

Compiz Fusion first development release

After a long time reorganizing, the people at the old Compiz and Beryl projects are releasing their first development release of the new Compiz Fusion. This is the first development release of Compiz Fusion, the result of more than six months of work and polish. The first stable release, 0.6.0, will follow after the Compiz 0.6.0 release.
