Cutting Off The Root: The Future Of Community Developed Android

  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Linux
The CyanogenMod team made news last week when they announced that future versions of their venerable Android build would no longer include root-level access by default, a massive departure from essentially every other custom Android ROM. Some have questioned the move, claiming that removing root undermines the very idea of running a custom ROM.

Frictional Games is one of those few development teams which releases Linux native versions of their games and quite possibly the only one that provides us ‘Tux Gamers’ with the survival horror fix some of us crave.

The Kubuntu Commitment

The Best, Against The Wind

Though the KDE desktop has a few obvious advantages over Unity, Kubuntu has always played second fiddle (maybe third) to Shuttleworth’s baby, Ubuntu. While the distro has received critcism and praise in equal parts, one thing has never change. Commitment.

Breaking…

Information has leaked to The Pirate Bay moments ago, which they subsequently leaked to Torrent Freak, that Swedish police are planning to raid the organization possibly within the next 24 hours.

The ranks at The Pirate Bay have learned that the police have already obtained warrants to raid their data facility. If this raid is carried out today, this will mark the second time The Pirate Bay has been unlawfully attacked by authorities influenced by Sweden’s most influential and affluent lobbyists.

Open-source Translation Database: Interview With Andrew Smith

As any developer can tell you, translating your software into different languages can be a pain. Even if you manage to track down willing volunteer translators for all the different languages you want your program to be in, you still need to work with people who you may end up having trouble communicating with.

TRS-80 Model 100: Back From The Brink

The TRS-80 Model 100 is a computer you owe a lot to, even if you don’t recognize it. Released in 1983 by Tandy (now known as RadioShack) for $1099 USD, the Model 100 was one of the world’s first “notebook” computers. At the time its design was radical, as computers had always been large objects tethered to bulky CRT monitors; the Model 100 helped introduce concepts we all take for granted now, such as all-in-one construction, integrated LCD display, and the ability to run on battery power. Selling over 6 million units, the Model 100 proved that a highly portable computer could be successful, and we’re still seeing the effects of that today.

Google Scaling Back Support For The CR-48?

Interesting development with today’s Chrome OS dev update: for the first time in the history of the Chrome OS project, Google’s own CR-48 reference device is not receiving the latest version of their experimental operating system. From the release announcement:

Potential buyers have been clamoring over the new KDE Spark tablet. Though predicted to perform otherwise, demand has been incredibly high as suggested by the sheer volume of pre-orders over at Make-Play-Live. Well, you don’t have to wait in line…

Low Orbit Ion Cannon Exposed

The United States Department of Justice, the Recording Industry Association of America, the Motion Picture Association of America, Amazon, PayPal, MasterCard, Visa. If you’ve heard of the attacks on any of these organizations, then you’ve heard about the results of the Low Orbit Ion Cannon (LOIC). LOIC is the weapon of choice of Anonymous and other “hacktivist” groups, enabling them to command a voluntary botnet.

What is the LOIC? How does it work? What good does it do? In this article, The Powerbase is going to examine the LOIC, and give our readers the information they need to interpret these current events.

Linux Faithful Author Writes Novel Entirely In Tweets

Notable science fiction and fantasy novelist Piers Anthony has now gone where no author has gone before. Twitter. Anthony, who is new to Twitter is attempting to write an entire novel using only tweets.

Piers started using Star Office in 2000 when he adopted Linux as his full-time OS. You could say that in this respect he is well ahead of the curve in our unavoidable future of Linux everywhere and this latest gimmick is no exception.

Install Faenza Icons in 4.8

Uh… Why? First, I should say that this guide is a guide for performing a very trivial task. There is nothing difficult here that would prevent an average user from installing the Faenza icon set in KDE. The only issue is that KDE does a bad job of advertising it’s ability to easily install themes, window decorations, icons and color schemes, among other things. In fact, it doesn’t really advertise it at all…

Not surprisingly, the staff at The Powerbase is mostly concerned with changes that affect the Linux version. Here they are;

Modded Android: A Space Odyssey

When I show friends and colleagues the things I’m able to do on my rooted Android device, many of them end up asking me to work similar magic on their hardware. I’ve always been happy to help out, and after a bit of research at home (how to get root, custom ROMs that are available, etc) I usually come to work a day or two later equipped with my laptop and the appropriate software. Unfortunately, I’ve recently come to realize that this doesn’t always work out to the advantage of the other person, or to me for that matter.

Why Mozilla And Canonical Should Join Forces

Where do I begin? This idea entered my head the same day that Canonical announced Ubuntu For Android. That same day, information leaked about a desktop-capable Android, most likely Android 5.0 Jelly Bean. The appeal of tethering Ubuntu to a monitor, keyboard and mouse–from an Android phone– is tremendous. The appeal of attaching an Android phone to a monitor and gaining desktop functionality while only having to use one OS is much greater, I’m afraid…

Google Wallet: Doomed?

One of the biggest new features of both Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” and the Galaxy Nexus was improved support for Near Field Communication (NFC). One of the most touted applications for NFC technology was Google Wallet, a project to replace your debit card with your phone. Leveraging the NFC hardware in the phone and Android’s built-in authentication methods (such as facial recognition unlocking, new in ICS), Google Wallet was supposed to be a more secure way to pay at supported retailers.

OnLive MicroConsole Review: PC Gaming Without The PC

About 10 years ago I decided I didn’t feel comfortable running a proprietary operating system on my computer anymore and made the leap to Linux, and like many converts, I had to give up PC gaming. I moved over to the next best thing, joining the legion of console gamers, but once and awhile there would be that one big PC game that I would miss out on.

Ubuntu On Your Phone, Raspberries In Your Pocket

Canonical announced today their intent to make Ubuntu available on Android. Yes, on Android. So, what does that mean? We’ve all probably seen Ubuntu booting on a mobile device before, but this is completely different…
