Several features for Mageia 4 are about providing more desktop environments as there is a lot of movement in this area at the moment. Edubuntu 13.10 Beta 1, Codename: Saucy Salamander, Beta Now Available. This build allows developers and users to evaluate early changes in this release and no details are finalised yet. Features that were partially implemented in Beta 1 and not completed have been removed in this Beta build and will be re-integrated after the release.

UbuntuKylin 13.10 Beta 1 is available. UbuntuKylin is an official Ubuntu subproject whose goal is to create a variant of Ubuntu that is more suitable for Chinese users using the Simplified Chinese writing system. The project provides a delicate, thoughtful and fully customised Chinese user experience out-of-the-box by providing a desktop user interface localised into Simplified Chinese and with software generally preferred by many Chinese users.

While Ubuntu developers no longer release development milestones, many of the Ubuntu derivatives continue using the traditional development model, with regular alpha and beta releases. Yesterday was the beta 1 release day for many of them, including Lubuntu.

Kubuntu 13.10 Beta 1 is now available for testing. It contains a bunch of new and updated features: KDE Plasma and Applications 4.11, Muon Discover, User Manager, Wireless Setup in Installer, KDE Telepathy with Better Text Editing and Improved Notifications, New Network Manager applet, and more.

The Xubuntu team is happy to announce the release of Xubuntu 13.10 'Saucy Salamander' beta 1 today. With this beta, we hope to have all of the most important features ready. We now seek people to actively test and identify bugs so we can squash them before our final release. Some of the highlights of the release include: new version of Xfce Settings with a new dialog to set up your monitors; improved themes with GTK+ 3.8 support and bug fixes; a new tool to change your theme colors; updated version of Gnumeric.

The second beta build of the 3.5 development release is now available on SourceForge with LXDE and Xfce on amd64 and i386 architectures. Please be aware this release provides users, beta testers and developers with a system to test out new features in the upcoming release. It may contain buggy code and features, so we encourage you to run it only on non-critical systems. Changes between -BETA1 and -BETA2 include: FreeBSD BETA2 to RC2; fix amd64 divers packages; fix amd64 and i386 packages. Known issues: Caja is in both Xfce and LXDE editions; Openbox and MATE editions are not yet ready, chances are that they will be released before beta 3. We look forward to receiving your feedback.

Simplicity Linux 13.10 alphas are now available. 13.10 is based on Raring Puppy 3.9.9.1 by Pemasu. The kernel is 3.9.9.1, as you might guess, and it is a non-PAE kernel, meaning you do not need a machine with PAE to be able to run it. The window manager is LXDE for all releases except Obsidian which uses Openbox (released tomorrow due to unforeseen problems). Desktop is our big release, it comes with media players, LibreOffice, and a lot of other software. Desktop is a full-featured Linux distro compared to the cut-down editions like Netbook and Obsidian, and less specialised than Media.

Slackel 4.0 Openbox has been released. Slackel is based on Slackware Linux and Salix OS. Includes the Linux kernel 3.10.9 and lots of updates from Slackware's 'Current' tree. Slackel 4.0 Openbox includes the Midori 0.5.0 web browser, Claws-Mail 3.9.2, Transmission, SpaceFM, OpenJRE 7u40, Rhino, IcedTea-Web, Pidgin 2.10.7, gFTP 2.0.19, wicd. AbiWord 2.8.6, Gnumeric 1.12.2 and ePDFViewer office applications are included. Whaaw! Media Player is the default movie player, Exaile 3.3.0 is the application to use for managing your music collection, Asunder CD ripper, Bracero for writing CD/DVDs and more. In the graphics section Viewnior 1.3, GIMP 2.8.6 and Scrot the snapshot utility.

The new SolydXK ISO images include the latest updates from the August update pack. Some things are changed, and some are new. Here's a short list: the default start menu has been replaced by the Whisker menu, this menu has a built-in search function, and you can easily change your favorite programs list; the wicd network manager has been replaced by NetworkManager, NetworkManager supports mobile broadband by default; KDE has been upgraded to version 4.10.5; the Zurmo CRM software has been upgraded to version 2.0.21; for those who'd like to try them all, we've released a SolydXK Multi DVD, the DVD consists of all five distributions.

We are glad to announce the release of Antergos 2013.08.20 with a lot of improvements in the installation process for you to enjoy your system from the start. This new release comes after several months' working mostly on our graphical installer Cnchi and on Remendo. Openbox has been included as an option to be installed along with GNOME, Cinnamon, Xfce, Razor-qt or Base. You will end up with a lightweight desktop, while having up to date software. The software included with Openbox was chosen to be in the line of the Openbox spirit.

LXLE Paradigm goes final with 12.04.3 update. 'Paradigm' is a tentative attempt to create four different desktop paradigms for users to choose from once they start up their aging computers when using LXLE. LXLE paradigm is not an attempt to completely mimic other desktops features and functions but to provide a desktop scheme that is familiar to all different types of computer users whether you are comfortable with Linux, OS X or Windows operating system. Currently the paradigms available at start-up are, GNOME 2 (G2), Windows (XP), OS X (OSX) and Ubuntu's Unity. Each desktop can be entered and/or used at any time, and you can switch back and forth at will.

Our goal is to provide a ready to use and easy to install desktop and laptop optimized operating system based on Debian's testing branch and the latest stable release of GNOME desktop environment. We have our own software repositories and build servers to build and provide all the necessary updates and missing features in Debian testing branch. Parsix GNU/Linux 5.0 (code name Lombardo) brings lots of updated packages, improved installer system, systemd init system and other quality new features. This version has been synchronized with Debian Wheezy repositories as of August 7, 2013. Parsix Lombardo ships with GNOME 3.8 and LibreOffice productivity suit by default.

ZevenOS 3.2 Screenshot Tour

The Neptune team is proud to announce the release of Neptune 3.2 (Codename 'Brotkasten on Speed'). This release features the Linux kernel 3.10.5 and is exclusively meant to run on 64bit CPUs. The Debian base system was updated to the released version 7.1 wheezy to provide a stable user experience. The KDE Plasma Desktop ships with version 4.10.5.

Clemens Toennies has announced the first prototype of Netrunner SE 13.06, where SE stands for the stealth edition of the Kubuntu-based desktop distribution. In this edition, certain software components have been replaced with their more secure counterparts. This version of Netrunner is shipped with privacy and security in mind. This means that you are able to use the Internet more securely and possibly circumvent censorship. You are able to encrypt E-Mail messages with GPG and chat securely with your friends via text, audio or video. You can encrypt files and folders or use an encrypted home partition. Netrunner SE 13.06 is built upon Netrunner 13.06 and comes with the following features and changes: Firefox with pre-configured Tor, FoxyProxy, HTTPs Everywhere and NoScript (surf anonymously, surf onion links, circumvent censorship); Thunderbird with Enigmail; Vidalia as Tor configuration tool; Pidgin with OTR support for encrypted text chats.
