I don’t really remeber when and where, but once I have read that GIMP isn’t suitable for pseudo 3D graphics. Nothing more fallible! I will try to prove it wrong.

Listening to Internet Radios seems easy nowadays with the rampant powerful graphical environments of KDE and GNOME. Given that the computer you have is well equipped with processing power, it will do well with all those graphics overkill. But should users who own older machines get rid of the pleasure of listening to the Internet radios? Never!

Many of you, Linux users, have Windows installed on your PCs for only one reason: it’s a game or a program, written only for the Redmond’s system. In the last few years true alternatives have appeared: Cedega and CrossOverOffice. Cedega is the WinAPI’s overlay, based on the open source Wine. It lets you play games designed for Microsoft systems.

  • Story Type: Tutorial; Groups: Linux
Unix systems provide a number of commands to manage files and directories. Their strong point is the ability to use them in a rather simple manner against a group of files/directories meeting certain conditions. For example all the files satisfying specific criteria can be deleted or have their names changed en masse.

There are a lot of free file managers. There is Nautilus, Konqueror, Dolphin, Thunar and more. All of them offer great functionality. However, they enjoy as a rule very intertwined interdependences, they demand a lot of libraries connected with their graphical environment, and they need X Window System server running. Of course, console zealots and users looking for “light” solutions are not left alone. They have MC!

Poland against OOXML?

Polish Technical Committee no 171 has just voted 80% against the adoption OOXML as an ISO standard [PL]. It’s not the end of the game though, since committee 171 which was first planned to make the decision does not make the final decision anymore. Another committee 182 — will be voting on the same issue on August 30th!

  • Story Type: Reviews; Groups: Linux
There seems to be a common belief that programmers usually work alone. This is completely untrue. Most of them create applications in teams exchanging ideas and sharing the source code through the Internet (or the Network in the office). There are some complex version control systems but they are suitable for large projects. What if you have a small project? Here comes is Gobby. With the help of this little app you can edit files together with other people or create new ones. Everything works remotely.

EnGarde — Secure Linux Server

This will be an unusual review, due to the fact that the distribution under review doesn’t have an X server, and you don’t really need to login on it to work… This review is about the just released EnGarde Secure Server 3.0.16 developed by Guardian Digital company with the help of the community.

  • PolishLinux.org; By Borys Musielak (Posted by michux on Aug 6, 2007 4:43 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Linux
I'd like to invite you to read the last of three articles from the "Dump Windows" saga of writings. Two previous articles (part I, part II) stirred up quite a controversy and a variety of opinions. With this article I'm hoping for calmer and more meritorious responses. In the last article of this series we will touch on the aspects of work and usefulness of the console, remote access, logic behind the OS, pricing, and TCO.

Tellico: manage your collection of CDs, coins and… wines

  • PolishLinux.org; By Michał Rzepka (Posted by michux on Aug 2, 2007 11:37 PM EDT)
  • Story Type: Reviews; Groups: Linux
I don’t know a person that hasn’t collected anything in their life (particularly in childhood). Some people didn’t age out of this habit and their collections of books, CDs or coins have grown so much that they have problems managing these collections using only a sheet of paper and a pencil. Tellico is the app for them.

MOC Audio Player — advanced tricks

  • PolishLinux.org; By Treadstone (Posted by michux on Jul 31, 2007 12:23 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Tutorial; Groups: Linux
I consider the MOC player to be a better solution for some users (including myself) than the very popular applications Xmms or Amarok, and the other visually appealing players. Why do I think so? Read on. I am about to describe some of the lesser known options of this excellent player.

rTorrent — console P2P!

In this article I’d like to describe a text-mode Bittorrent client - rTorrent. It will be helpful to people that share a computer with other household members because it allows them to download files regardless of the logged in user. What’s more, because it is a text-mode client (runs under ncurses) you can watch how it works through any ssh client, web browser (ajaxterm) or even cell phone (MidpSSH). Wikipedia and the official website says that the very optimized code makes rTorrent much faster than the official client. So, do you want more? Bring it on!

  • PolishLinux.org; By Piotr Maliński (Posted by michux on Jul 23, 2007 2:50 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Reviews; Groups: Linux
E17 is a still being developed version of a graphical environment called Enlightenment. E17 has been developed for a long time already. Updates have been appearing often, but they used to become obsolete in a few weeks after releases. Has anything changed suddenly? No, nothing really. Stable release of the environment is not planned anytime soon, but this of course isn’t a problem for us to have a glance at what Enlightenment has to offer at the moment.

Vmware Server Console — Introduction to Virtualization

The majority of Linux users have gotten used to keeping more than one operating system on their hard disks. Most frequently the second system is a version of Microsoft Windows needed for running some application WINE refuses to start. Constant switching is irritating. Fortunately there is another option. Virtualization technology allows us to run several systems on the same computer, at the same time. In the article Paulina Budzoń introduces you to virtualization basing on the Vmware Server Console v. 1.0.3
