I am not the only one who thinks Windows 8 is the next Vista. Gabe Newell, Valve co-founder and Managing Director, doesn't hold very high opinion of Microsoft's Windows 8. He calls it "a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space" during a videogame conference Casual Connect in Seattle.

Linux Mint is an excellent distribution for a Windows user who wants to give GNU/Linux a try without having relearn everything from scratch; it's an excellent distribution for a KDE fan who wants the easy of use of an Ubuntu-based distribution and it's also a great distribution for those who don't feel comfortable with Unity of Gnome shell. On top of that it is an excellent distribution for any Linux user who wants complete control of her machine. So, if you are any of these users you should give Linux Mint a try.

In a FESCo meeting held on 23rd July, Fedora's Engineering And Steering Committee members have decided to include UEFI Secure Boot in Fedora 18. Codenamed Spherical Cow, this release is scheduled to be out this November. Only two votes out of nine were against inclusion of secure boot.

Just the way there is a LO plugin for Google Docs, there is an excellent app for Chrome which allows you to run LibreOffice within the Chrome browser. So, now Chromebook or Chromebox owners can run LibreOffice on their devices.

Google is one of the few companies (or may be the only company) which fights for their users. Attacking them is not going to do any good. It will only weaken the only friend we have in the industry dominated by abusive monopolies like Microsoft or draconian forces like Apple.

LibreOffice has an excellent extension which allows a user do exactly the same. You can access the files on Google Docs from within LibreOffice, download a local version, work on it, and keep it synced with Google Docs. At the same time you can create new files and 'upload' them to Google Docs from within LibreOffice.

Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of Ubuntu, today announced a new feature for the next version of Ubuntu which offer a better desktop integration with the web.

The Document Foundation has released an infographic showing the current state of growth of the LibreOffice office suite. The document shows a steady increase in downloads per week and new code committers, while a variable graph for code contributors and commits per month.

"The problem is Google Docs' integration with Google Drive is messy. The files that you create using Google Docs are saved in some .gdoc format which can't be opened using LibreOffice or MS Word. Which means you can't open, view or edit these files from your desktop. If you want to work on these files using LO, you will have to first convert/download these files as .odt in the folder. Which means now you have two files with same content."

Raspberry Pi foundation has announced the release of the first SD card image based on the Raspbian distribution. The image will make it easier for Raspberry Pi users to switch from 'generic' Debian Squeeze to this 'optimized' image.

The Valve team has set up a blog specifically about their GNU/Linux and Open Source initiative so as to crush the rumors and misinformation out there. In the first blog post the team admitted that they have been working on 'moving Steam and the Source game engine to Linux.'

These articles are first and foremost meant for beginners in Ubuntu world and open source in general. That doesn't mean that others, who are already very well involved in both the worlds, are forbidden to read. All of you are very welcome with your suggestions/ideas what could be better.

Apple is stooping to a whole new level. The company is evidently scared of competition in the mobile and is using every legal means to 'kill' Android.

The same company which stole UI from Xerox, whose founded shamelessly admitted that they have been shameless about stealing ideas from other companies is putting the Galaxy Nexus phone it the category of 'stolen, pirated, counterfeit, or infringing products.'

I recently became a KDE user, that was the time when Gnome Shell was going through transition and extensions were missing and I was looking for something which I could use without much frustration. One of the things that I love the most about KDE is the polishes interface and total control over your desktop. You can customize almost every aspect of KDE. In addition, the familiar UI (simple and aimed at the traditional desktop) makes it easy to continue to work without having to learn new tricks.

The image that Ubuntu has created makes it easier for it to 'mingle' with the typical Indian users who, like most of us, are usually not very tech savvy. Indian market makes it easier for Ubuntu to invade the traditional Windows market. Unlike the US, where the delivery of content (such as Netflix) is one of the major hurdles in the adoption of Ubuntu, India doesn’t pose the same challenge because this sub-continent lacks such services.

Google’s Chrome Web Store is getting some really nifty apps, and I will be writing about them at a regular basis as I plan to spend most of my ‘Internet’ time on the Chromebook and see if it can be a great device for writers and journalists.

Amazon is reportedly working on its own Android based smartphone. Bloomberg published a story last week and now Wall Street Journal has also reported the 'existence' of Amazon smartphone. According to their sources the device is being tested with Asian suppliers and can go in mass production later this year or next year. Personally I have nothing against Amazon and I am a huge fan of Amazon when it comes to buy stuff from them. There service is awesome. But at the same time am pro-user which means I care more about the freedom that a user must have and Amazon's Kindle Fire denies that freedom, so will Amazon smartphone.
