Anyone that carries confidential data around on their laptop has probably considered encryption at some point or other. However, the typical methods seem to generally entail either manual mounting of your encrypted volume (a pain) or volumes that automount when you login based on your login information (not exactly secure as anyone who forces you to login will have access).

Microsoft offers cash back search

Microsoft is offering "cold hard cash" to persuade users to shop online using its Live Search engine and help the company catch up to rival Google. The savings range between 2% to 30% on products sold by select retailers through its so called cashback service. Microsoft's new site is seen as an attempt to convince advertisers it can combat Google's increasing share of the online ad market. "2008 is the year that search got competitive," said Bill Gates.

Blinging out my UltraLapSR

Ok, as you probably know by now I'm a Gentoo geek and immediately setup my new ZaReason UltraLapSR with Gentoo. Since my UltraLapSR has a discreet video card, it's only fitting that I should bling it out to show off the power of my laptop and Compiz-Fusion to people. :)

In January 2007, two of us (professor Joel Adams and student Tim Brom) decided to build a personal, portable Beowulf cluster. Like a personal computer, the cost had to be low -- our budget was $2500 -- and its size had to be small enough to sit on a person's desk. Joel and Tim named their system Microwulf, which has broken the $100/GFLOP barrier for double precision, and is remarkably efficient by several measures. You may also want to take a look at the Value Cluster project for more information on $2500 clusters.

McBride on Aug. 28 sat down with InformationWeek editor-at-large Paul McDougall to discuss a broad range of topics relating to the company's legal battle against Novell, and what the future might hold for the company in light of its recent courtroom and financial setbacks."
