Software Freedom Day is fast approaching. What are you doing in your area?

Celebrate Software Freedom Day

Software Freedom Day is right around the corner. In fact, it's Saturday, 16 September. Software Freedom Day is an opportunity to demonstrate and discuss what libre software can do, and the importance of libre licenses. Smart organizers know they can share the values we all hold dear without beating people over the head. The Question is, what have you planned in your local area?

SFD Charlotte

Here in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Charlotte Linux User Group (CharLUG) is working with the University of North Carolina-Charlotte Linux User Group (UNCCLUG) to share the love at the Cone Center on the UNCC campus. UNCCLUG's new president, Johhny L. Hopkins, has been working feverishly to get the appropriate permissions to use campus facilities and has even begun advertising the event through various campus outlets.

So what's in the planning? Well, CharLUG Vice-Chairman and LXer Editor-in-Chief, Don Parris will be providing a few demo PCs decked out with different GNU/Linux distros so people can have an opportunity to explore the capabilities of a GNU/Linux system. Additionally, the SFD crew will bring laptops. Four fifteen-minute mini lectures will be interspersed throughout the 3-hour event. Naturally, there will be CDs for the taking. There might even be some food available.

The theme for Software Freedom Day - Charlotte is "Free Enterprise, Free Speech, Free Software", and aims to effectively help the unfamiliar connect "Free Software" with freedom. The mini-lectures will cover the definition of Free/Open Source Software, what people can do with FOSS, discuss the "free as in free speech, not free beer" concept, and connect the concept of Free Software to free enterprise.

Software Freedom Day Around the Globe

Other groups will be passing out CDs, setting up demo PCs showing off books, decorating with balloons and so on.
