How to Multitask at the Linux Command Line with Screen

I’ll admit up front – it’s embarrassingly late for me to have discovered screen. Friends and coworkers have been suggesting it to me for years, but it wasn’t until recently that I had a concrete need for it. Now I wish I’d had it all along. In short, screen gives you the equivalent of the “workspaces” you find in Gnome, KDE, and other desktop environments, but for the command line. It may not sound like much, but like the graphical equivalent, you begin to see the power after a few uses. Today we’re going to cover some screen basics useful for your home desktop but especially useful if you use remote access tools like SSH.

Manage Your Photo Gallery from Android Using ReGalAndroid

If you host your own photo gallery using either Piwigo or Gallery software and you happen to use an Android device, the ReGalAndroid app is right up your alley. Despite its spartan interface, this is a rather capable app that offers a few handy features. For starters, it supports the Piwigo and Gallery2 applications as well as the new Gallery3 release. When will Linux games become more mainstream?

Developers are quite often gamers at heart. Until they get to core structure, there is no respite. Delving deep into popular games and rebuilding them are quite often the reason developers go on to develop the next generation of games.

OpenVZ is the open-source branch of Virtuozzo, a commercial virtualization solution used by many providers that offer virtual servers. The OpenVZ kernel patch is licensed under the GPL license, and the user-level tools are under the QPL license.

How to Upgrade your Ubuntu ISO Without Re-downloading

Ubuntu 11.04 is finally here and you can’t wait to download it, but as is typical on any Ubuntu release day, the mirrors are crawling. Luckily if you have an old Ubuntu .iso you can update it easily with zsync. Zsync is a Linux command that allows you to compare an existing .iso with an up-to-date zsync meta file to download only the missing or out of date parts. Combine those parts with your existing file and what you are left with is a completely up to date iso without spending the time to download the entire file.
