Putting the Snear Before the Scoop: Joe Nocera and Steve Jobs

Ever since a gaunt Steve Jobs addressed the adoring crowds at this year's Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, the press, Apple fans - and most especially, Apple investors - have been concerned over the state of his health. Today comes the good news that Steve is just fine, thank you. The bad news is how the news was reported.

Up until now, Apple has refused to discuss whether or not Jobs has had a recurrence of his cancer - or any details at all. So you might think that when a New York Times journalist gets a call from Jobs' himself saying that his health is not in danger, that he'd run with that scoop for all it was worth. But you'd be wrong.

Unfortunately, like a CEO who's privacy and health are at stake, those that type words for a living can sometimes let their egos get ahead of their Jobs.
