Synaptics has just announced that they are bringing multi-touch
capability to the
Linux desktop with their Synaptics Gesture Suite (SGS) for Linux.
(Today's press release is available here: press
release.) Synaptics makes touchpad and other touch-based user
interface devices
for many companies, including some of major computer and laptop
manufacturers. A Wikipedia
article indicates that the company's OEMs include such computer
manufacturers as Asus, Acer, Dell,
HP, Sony, Toshiba, Gateway, IBM, Lenovo, Samsung, and more.
SGS
for Linux (SGS-L) supports such enhancements and gestures as two-finger
scrolling, pinch-to-zoom, twist-to-rotate, three-finger gestures, and
other scrolling and multi-finger techniques. You can find more
information about the capabilities of SGS-L at http://www.synaptics.com/go/SGSL.
According to the press release, Synaptics is providing
SGS-L to their partners free of charge, and bundled with their enhanced
driver interface, when it is ordered with Synaptics' TouchPad and
ClickPad(tm)
products. Synaptics lists these supported versions of Linux: "Fedora,
Millos
Linpus, Red Flag, SLED 11 (SuSE), Ubuntu, and Xandros." We are sure
that this means that we will soon see these
features on computers featuring Linux distributions.
