Open Solaris a source of contention

LINUX distributor Novell has taken a shot at open-source rival Sun, saying the company's moves to open the code on its Solaris operating system had added little to the open-source community.

Novell president and chief operating officer Ron Hovsepian said open-sourcing the code of the Unix-based system was "marketing open source, rather than a true technical open source".
"I don't see the economic benefit to the (open-source) community that occurs around that," he said.
In Australia to promote the latest incarnation of Novell's SUSE Linux distribution, Mr Hovsepian said Sun's move was producing fragmentation in open-source development.
"The whole spirit of open source is to have one base of code," he said. "Open-sourcing Solaris - while it's appreciated that you can see the low-level pieces of code - doesn't move the overall effort of the open-source community further down the track.
