Derby is a great database for Ajax applications -- particularly if the client and server are on the same host -- due to Derby's zero admin requirements and ability to be embedded. This article explains all the steps and requirements to create an embedded database and Web server application. The source code and a ready to run application provided as a zip file are available for download. The Derby database acts as the data repository, the Jetty Web server or servlet container handles the HTTP requests, and Ajax technologies are used to enhance the presentation and responsiveness of the client.
