Today’s New York Times reports on the new open source storage project called Cleversafe http://www.cleversafe.org/ that secures data by “Scattering the Pieces" (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/21/technology/21storage.html?).

Today’s New York Times reports on the new open source storage project called Cleversafe http://www.cleversafe.org/ that secures data by “Scattering the Pieces" (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/21/technology/21storage.html?).

Unlike data storage mechanisms that work "by making multiple copes of data," the Cleversafe software takes an "approach based on dispersing data in encrypted slices." The technology uses algorithmic techniques known by mathematicians since the 70's. Adi Shamir (of RSA) first wrote of information dispersal is his 1979 paper "How to Share a Secret" http://crypto.csail.mit.edu/classes/6.857/papers/secret-shamir.pdf#search=%22%22how%20to%20share%20a%20secret%22%.
