The Israeli finance ministry plans to distribute 150,000 copies of OpenOffice
The Committee for the Information & Knowledge Society Technology in Israel note on it's web site, that the Israeli finance ministry decided to participate in internationalization and localization of the open source office suite, Open Office, to the Hebrew language.
According to the site, the goal of this step, is to encourage free choice, and to lessen the digital gap. It note the need for support of organizations that can help the distribution to the general population using Internet sites, advertising in newspapers and internal distribution within the organizations themselves. There is also a need, according to the site, for training using the Internet and telephone support.
The announcement also notes that the estimated cost of distributing 150,000 copies of the software is about 240,000 NIS (53,000 US$).
A Hebrew localized version of OpenOffice.org 1.1.0 is already available from the Hebrew OpenOffice.org site. The current version (OpenOffice.org 1.1.1) supports authoring of Hebrew documents, although it doesn't currently have Hebrew user interface.
