If accurate, this article leads me to only one conclusion...

If Mono (or Moonlight) is involved in any FOSS code, remove it and reject it utterly. Do not use it, implement it, develop it, encourage it or in any way give support to what "Microsoft Miguel" is doing. I may be simplistic in my views but where Microsoft can exert competitive power with patents, especially against Linux, I believe that the Redmond company ultimately will do so. Its bottom line is now under threat and as one very recent article noted: Microsoft is now looking under lounge cushions for every scrap of currency it can get . Since, Mono remains patent encumbered (assuming this article is accurate) Microsoft WILL therefore, eventually employ that encumbrance against Linux interests. Just ask Tom Tom for confirmation that Microsoft will use patents without hesitation, Linux user or not. The aspect that continues to confound me in every way is that de Icaza continues to apparently believe that Microsoft is a "benevolent company that wants collaboration with Linux", even after he knows that it took years of fighting, negotiation, enormous fines, a legal conviction and the might of the EU to force Microsoft into releasing material that allows a similar cross exchange of data with Samba under very controlled and agreed conditions with a big difference: patent encumbrance is absent. In discussions with another Linux user, both myself and that user have come to our personal conclusion that de Icaza has a hidden agenda based solely on Microsoft's wishes to harm Linux. We have no direct evidence for it other than the recent award given to Miguel by Microsoft, but if something looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and waddles like a duck...........circumstantial of course, and undoubtedly Miguel can prove we are wrong.....but we continue to suspect. |

I've asked TomTom on numerous occassions, and they still won't support Linux desktops. |
Bob_Robertson Jan 19, 2010 5:44 PM EDT |
...or NetFlix. NetFlix also will stream to a 'Net connected XBox, but not a Wii, so I figure money has changed hands, agreements made, that sort of thing. |
Ridcully Jan 19, 2010 5:47 PM EDT |
By way of explanation.....my use of Tom Tom as an example was purely on the application of patents, not that Tom Tom uses Linux. |

Quoting:NetFlix also will stream to a 'Net connected XBox, but not a Wii, The PS3 also has NetFlix. And the Wii is getting NetFlix. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/technologybrierdudleys... From what I understand the issue holding the Wii back was the HD support, but I guess they finally realized that most people don't care if they are watching standard or HD feeds from NetFlix. |

> most people don't care if they are watching standard or HD feeds from NetFlix. If you've seen what NetFlix streams, you'd know how true that is. Still, their PC player requires Silverlight. |
hkwint Jan 20, 2010 8:13 AM EDT |
When the Olympic Games / Tour de France / World Championship Soccer sell their rights to our local public broadcast company, they demand DRM. Flash doesn't support DRM (they say), Silverlight does. So when our PBC broadcasts one of those sport events, you need Silverlight as well. How great is that? |
gus3 Jan 20, 2010 12:07 PM EDT |
One more reason to pay no attention to those events. |
herzeleid Jan 20, 2010 4:14 PM EDT |
Quoting: Still, their PC player requires Silverlight.Yeah, that's a shame. If I found another provider that was more linux friendly I'd drop netflix. Fortunately I received a roku box from a friend who had an extra, so I can watch netflix streaming movies. Caught a couple of episodes of the office last night. Ironically, the roku box runs linux. |
Bob_Robertson Jan 20, 2010 4:35 PM EDT |
> Ironically, the roku box runs linux. That is so very cool. Case in point to prove "Windows" or "Linux" has nothing what so ever to do with it. |

Quoting:One more reason to pay no attention to those events. Hell no, Tour de France starts in NL again, just like Giro'd Italia (and last year Vuelta a Espana, all in NL!) so I'm just going to the real life - event. For free, as in beer, and I'm even allowed to film and post to Youtube, legally! Yeah, sure gotta love cycling, it's about the cheapest sport to visit and there are no other sports where you can almost touch the sporters like that. For the two other events, I agree. However, I still have an old coax 4:3 CRT TV with no 'digital broadcast' abilities at all, and believe it or not, but I can watch all those events live without downloading / installing anything. Gotta love old school compatibility. OK, I'm done, you can rest now. Back to the Netflix: I couldn't care less. It's not available outside the US anyway, so why would anyone outside the US care if it requires Silverlight or not? |

The taxes on Texas taxis. (An old, inside joke. Laughter is not required.) |
hkwint Jan 20, 2010 5:29 PM EDT |

De Icaza and his #1 friend and Astroturf Engine Lefty Schlesinger threaten a beating to a journalist: and here we have David "Lefty" Schlesinger threatening to put a gang style beat down on a journalist Stonemirror posted : Posted: Sun Aug 02, 2009 11:03 am Post subject: Re: CentOS will continue [Login to view extended thread Info.] Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?) http://help.lockergnome.com/linux/CENTOS-Freetard-Run-Piggy-... quote (If it's Miguel that Roy's worried about, I certainly wouldn't _blame_ Miguel for wanting to take a swing at Roy; in fact, if Miguel were to ask me to--which he wouldn't--I'd be willing to seriously consider holding Roy down while Miguel worked him over. That said, I have to say that Miguel, who is more of a gentleman than I'll be in two lifetimes, would never do such a thing: I've broken up an _actual about-to-turn-into-a-fight_ with Miguel. Peacefully. He's a peaceful guy. Me, I'm as peaceful as I _can_ be.) unquote |
slaphon Jan 22, 2010 5:41 PM EDT |
and further, de Icaza's dear friend Lefty is also dabbling in blackmail and pornography.... David "Lefty" Schlesinger, Gnome and Pornography! David Lefty Schlesinger aka "stonemirror" is now publishing pornographic photos of his critics. David Lefty Schlesinger aka "stonemirror" is now publishing nude photos to defame and harm individuals he has insane grudges against : and he has no possible copyright to these ten year old photos which have never been public in any form. He 'acquired' them for a sum of cash from an ex of the party on display on his harassment/blackmail website extinct-marsupial.org. That alone sums up the ethics of Schlesinger, and trumps anything he choses to throw up in his usual pattern of obfuscation and lies. Run a WHOIS on the now pornographic site extinct-marsupial.org : it is owned and operated by David Lefty Schlesinger, pornographer now along with Troll and Stalker of legendary status. Ask Kathy Sutphen about him, she received similar treatment and her testimony is archived. Several other individuals have made similar complaints. Bruce Perens has in public noted that Schlesinger appears to be emotionally unbalanced, and Perens also called Schlesinger a "confabulator" ie a liar : http://lwn.net/Articles/366559/ Lefty sits on the Gnome Advisory Board and the Gnome Foundation, so I maintain that his documented behavior is extremely relevant to this topic. So, watch out if you show public support for RMS or actual Free Software (not the cheap fraud called merely "open source"), or you might just find nude pictures of yourself up on one of Lefty's harassment pages. I ask you, is this acceptable behavior in any possible circumstance? and here are Lefty's very transparent and insulting lies regarding these inexcusable and horrendously vile actions he has taken: "Free as in "Free" of any factual value whatsoever Once again, my management has received a lovely letter from a "freedom-lover", making a variety of exciting claims, such as the following: Your employee David N. Schlesinger has in public admitted to publishing stolen pornographic photographs. This behavior of his looks very bad indeed for both ACCESS, Inc. and the Gnome Advisory Board which ACCESS pays $10,000 per year to keep Schlesinger sitting on. Fun stuff. I've also had fraudulent DMCA claims and ICANN notifications from the very same "freedom-lover" to deal with this morning. It's terrific the way that folks who like to tell you how they're are all about "freedom" find means to justify their apparent ends." - David Lefty Schlesinger aka "stonemirror" quoted here : http://opensourcetogo.blogspot.com/2010/01/free-as-in-free-o... Why does this man who has never contributed anything to Gnome but a futile attempt at a vote to split Gnome from Gnu even allowed on this board? The answer is corporate politics ; and if you have even a shred of ethical sense, it should make you shudder and worse - throw up in your mouth a little. The Pod People have taken over Gnome, this much is obvious. And they are completely ruthless and unscrupulous. (the pornographic photos on the site are temporarily removed through DMCA takedown, but Schlesinger vows belligerently to put them back as soon as he is legally able to) |

David “Lefty” Schlesinger aka ‘Stonemirror’ has a long, long history with other people unrelated to me in any way who have accused him of threats of violence and extortion, in those exact and verbatim terms. This is all archived in the mid 90’s waldorf critics email archive. In particular, Lefty so terrorized a woman named Kathy Sutphen with his threats and demands of $5,000 legal damages for every one of his menacing emails that she published - that Kathy was in fear for her physical safety and suffered adverse mental and physical effects. This is archived here, and in other places in the Waldorf/Anthroposophist critics archive: [HYPERLINK@www.waldorfcritics.org] and quoted verbatim : ““I’d save the ASCII totem for an occasion just prior to your court )) )date, in the event that ever actually comes to pass: you’ll need all )) )the good luck you can scrape together. )) ) )) )– )) )Lefty Redux [gYon-Pa] (lefty apple.com), (dns netcom.com) )) )C:.M:.C:., D:.O:.D:. )) )) I was utterly shocked by the vicious animosity of these messages. ZQB Jan 25, 2010 5:48 PM EDT |
Except that it is not useful information, as with everything from Schlesinger it is complete b******t. He has been making the same legal threats against nearly a dozen people since 1996, and he has yet to sue a single one of them. He threatened Kathy Sutphen with a defamation suit for publishing his own emails to her which were menacing and crossed the line of legal harassment. He threatened her with a $5,000 extortion fee for every one of his threats she made public. One's own words, blogs and emails when linked to or quoted verbatim can not under any US court come within a million miles of defamation. since 1996, Schlesinger has been making the same rants, threats, insults and complaints against many different people, like a broken record! "I intend to avail myself of every legal means necessary to collect the fees which I contend that these people owe me. I am also considering taking action against them for tortious interference in attempting to infringe my ability to earn a living, and for libel and defamation of character for the unfounded charges they have made in this public forum of Mr. Dugan’s."- David "Lefty" Schlesinger aka "stonemirror" repeating himself with the same vain threats since 1996 !!! http://crankyoldnutcase.blogspot.com/2009/10/open-source-vs-... Evidence, facts and one's own public, quoted words do not count as libel. Learn it, live it, love it. God will not look upon you with favor if you allow fear of Godless heathens and other Democrats with their communist agendas and naieve, rose-colored-glasses mush-minded outlooks shut you up. Before long, somebody will start saying we should hesitate to bomb Iran into oblivion. Along with N. Korea and China. And say -- Isn't there some way we can use coal to run our cars? That really ought to give those lying know-nothing global warming believers a hernia even sooner than their defective Priuses (Priii?) kill them by running into a brick wall when the brakes fail. Fortunately for them, we have the world's best health care, which should forever remain untouched by government hands and will be once Medicare and Medicaid are repealed. That should be sufficient, I would think. I've used that phrase for years. In 2007, as Paul Harvey's health was declining, he had several substitute commentators, among them Fred Thompson. During the noontime broadcast, he slipped that phrase in as a comment on a news story, and immediately got my endorsement for a Presidential run. Really, anyone who thinks the way I do, can't be all bad. ;-) |

dinotrac Feb 12, 2010 3:52 PM EDT |
hans -- light-real is less satisfying, but definitely healthier than heavy real. And -- so easy to work with!! Slice up some onions and celery, make some potato wedges, and throw them all into a nice cast-iron dutch oven that you have pre-heated with a tablespoon of nolive oil. When the onions begin to carmelize, thrown in the light-real. After 15 minutes, you will see that the light-real has opened to reveal Britney Spears, Stephen Colbert, Oprah, an Old Navy Store, the Real Housewives of Orange County, and more assorted trivia than you can imagine. A little low in nutrition, but so much less depressing than heavy real. |

Any bets on that Bruce Perens email being a forgery? Dear Mr. victimsoflefty, It doesn't take much brain power to deduce that the likelyhood of that email being legit is slim-to-none since neither Lefty nor Bruce Perens have published such an email. Between your frequent pseudonym changes and your unwillingness to leave any email address for contacting you, I'd find it extremely hard to believe that Bruce Perens dug up your true identity to Cc you on such an email. I also find it extremely unlikely that Bruce Perens would want to tarnish his reputation in associating with the likes of you. Also, didn't you tell Carla you were a woman? Then you're a man. The other day, while I was on my way to a doctor's appointment, I drove past a donut shop. I thought to myself that a donut might taste good. Then I thought well no I'm already fat. So I kept driving. Then I was thinking what I'd do if I got a flat tire while driving up the hill in the rain. Maybe I could make it far enough to get off the main road. I do have a life but as for shoveling snow, nope. I live in Phoenix Arizona where there never has been nor will there ever be weather of any kind to measure outside of the intensity of the UV index depending on if its January or June. It only rains for mere minutes at a time here, if that. The last time it rained for a whole day, as in 24 hours was over 14 years ago. We are supposed to average 7 or so inches of rain a year, we have averaged about half of that for the last decade or so. In Phoenix, we stand outside and watch it rain to prove to ourselves it actually happened because you never know if its ever going to happen again in your lifetime. I haven't seen anything besides clear and sunny with temperatures between 70-115 degrees in 20+ years. I hear about all this cool weather that happens in other places but not here in PHX, not ever. ;-) |

Which one is getting government funding this year? |
hkwint Feb 13, 2010 5:45 PM EDT |
Yeah, I like discussing the weather. It is not a violation of TOS, and is never on topic, and every one likes to join the discussion, so it has to be good way of LXer-socializing. Storyteller: Take some European snow. Not for as long as I live - that's the past 25 years - has there been so much snow in my country (over fifty days compared to about twenty days normally). And even more: There's snow in Rome, which has not happened the past 20 years. There was also snow at the beaches of Spain (also not happened for over 20 years), and in Belgium because of the snow there were more km's of traffic jams than the total length of their highways. Nonetheless, I guess Washington DC is closer. Maybe find a way to swap Washington DC with Washington state, those names are almost the same and foreigners always mistake one for the other, so that sounds like a nice idea. If all else fails, do like the Austrians and make your own snow. Bob R, isn't their some nice article about the Austrian point of view of snow? I mean, what does Mises say about the Austrian way to cure a lack of snow with regard to 'Snow Generators' as compared to 'wealth generators?' There must be some interesting article I guess... Or just postpone all snow related sports and start with the ones that doesn't need snow, like all 'indoor' sports such as curling, ice hockey, speed skating etc. There has to be some solution I guess? |

Bob I have never voted for him not will I ever..but that is a conversation for another place. And there is no worries of rising seas or glaciers in PHX. At 1,100ft above sea level there is very little fear of the Ocean coming in and Glaciers? Blizzards? Ice? Cold? Hah! Please! I live in Phoenix..;-) |
azerthoth Feb 13, 2010 8:41 PM EDT |
Scott with this global warming dropping snow storms further and further south ... it could happen. We have to stop global warming before it snows in Phoenix!!! |
Bob_Robertson Feb 13, 2010 8:53 PM EDT |
HK, the only Austrian position I can imagine is that the Free Market will let people figure out how to make as much snow as they can make and still make a profit. There is a solution, but there is no way to know who knows what that solution is, nor does anyone know how to quantify that solution since the solution is subjective in valuation. Ordinal not Cardinal. > Glaciers? Blizzards? Ice? Cold? Hah! Please! I live in Phoenix..;-) The SCA has an annual event in Phoenix, the Estrella war, in February. I've been there, and as you say "cold" is not a good descriptive word. |
hkwint Feb 13, 2010 9:30 PM EDT |
Cold depends on your frame of reference I guess. I've been to Tunisia a while ago, in March, and it was 'cold' they told me. It was 15°C (59F) and those people were wearing their winter coats. However, I was once in Denmark in the summer, and there were some people from Iceland in front of us (at the camping site). As soon as the mercury hit 13° (55F) they were lying on their back dressed only in short pants and sandals chugging from the heat. Later that day the temperature rose to 30° and they didn't know where to go. It's a bit like frame of reference with respect to software I guess: If you're used to Windows, Linux appears safe. And if you're used to Linux, MacOSX may seem 'approachable' for those who never used a computer. Or something... [quote]Ordinal not Cardinal.[quote] Ordinal nor cardinal but Canonical, like in Mono but not in Stereo? |

Scott_Ruecker Feb 14, 2010 1:41 AM EDT |
Not true! Not true! Sideways and Drunk at the time maybe, but never backwards and naked.. ..in public.. ..yet..;-) Carla is referring to my drum-kit. The band I am in just released its first record and I played a gig two nights ago where I set up my kit 'sideways' for the first time so that the audience could essentially look over my shoulder and see what I was doing. Drummers usually set up with their kits facing forward (with the front of their bass drum facing you) so all one can see is some sticks, hair (if they have any) and a wall of shells and cymbals. My bandmates and the audience's reaction was very positive. People who have seen me play many times told me they never realized how much I was doing until now. Several made me swear to set them up that way again.. Talk about going off topic..I swear I am not self promoting which is against the TOS. Scott |

Speaking of IPv6, I found this interesting development. The D-Link DIR-615 version C ran IPv6 and acted as a tunnel termination, basically a wonderful way to implement IPv6 right now. ...but the version D doesn't. At the same time, their DIR-825 didn't do IPv6, but version B does! And the pages from the product manual available at the D-Link web site demonstrate the same functionality that the DIR-615 previous version had. Funny thing, the -825 is about $80 more. They wouldn't have realized they could get people to buy the more expensive version, could they? Just musing. |

Bob_Robertson Feb 15, 2010 4:13 PM EDT |
On Friday, I think, when it was so blasted windy around here, I had to drive to get something. The wind was so strong, it was blowing the car around on the road. So much so I took pains not to cruise next to anyone, just in case. I noticed that everyone else was having much the same problem. Even in Utah, where they get some serious winds, that Saab stuck to the road like glue. No matter what the wind was doing, it never seemed to effect the car enough for me to really have to deal with it. Then they came out with the 9000, and they looked just like everyone else's cars. Boring. |
hkwint Feb 15, 2010 6:26 PM EDT |
Oh man, this one really is too easy...Quoting:Sad to see the current state of the company ... Then they came out with the 9000, and they looked just like everyone else's cars. Boring. If accurate, that leads me to only one conclusion... It's General Motors that led to the current sad state of the company and only boring cars (like everyone else's cars) being produced. So basically you're saying GM screwed up. Given Saab only lost money after it was bought by GM, and since GM is bankrupt nowadays and had to be bought by the US citizens to survive, that statement surely can't be denied. Thank God (sorry TOS) Saab was saved from the grave. Sure, it's still with one foot in the grave as it was bought by some silly Dutch guy that never made any profit with his first brand BTW, but apart from that it's the second car manufacturer with an 'aero history' he buys. Which brings us back to V.4: It's the last aeroplane Spyker produced (during the 20's). So we're back on topic after a short detour it seems. |
Bob_Robertson Feb 15, 2010 7:27 PM EDT |
My favorite motorcycle was a v4. |
dinotrac Feb 16, 2010 11:29 AM EDT |
Hans -- GM has a long and proud history of screwing up cars, going back to the soulless reign Roger Smith (of "Roger and Me" fame) a financial type, who saw cars only in terms of "units". Prior to Smith, GM had the generic American car company problems -- product mix that reflected an older reality, quality control that fit the world of new care every other year buyers, and a conviction that small = cheaply made. But -- they also had some audacious engineering and styling chops. The Corvair, unfairly maligned by the Naderites, was one of the most interesting (and entertaining) cars ever produced in the US -- especially after the 1965 suspension redesign. The Corvette was always (except for the ealry 1970s) good for a thrill or two, and things like the humangaloid Olds Toronado and Cadillac ElDorado were the ultimate surreal implementations of the Austin Mini -- giant high-power front wheel drive cars that conspicuously avoided any of the packaging efficiency (save for a flat rear floor) that led small car makers in that direction. Smith led to units with badges, nearly-identical (and boring) cars old at multiple price-points, including the absurd Cadillac Cimarron. People got wise and Smith proved to an honest observer that financial types can ruin a non-financial company. |
hkwint Feb 17, 2010 8:41 AM EDT |
Hey, you were not supposed to agree! Now our OT discussion is over, because we can't discuss something we agree on (Yes, Corvette's are nice, you see, no discussion!)Quoting:I've asked TomTom on numerous occassions, and they still won't support Linux desktops. TomTom is irrelevant now that Google Maps etc. runs on Android I guess. Another company RIP, overtaken by technological progress and cheap mass market smartphones. They'd better start selling PND's you can use to text and phone, using VOIP etc. |
