Six years ago, Dr. James Heilman was working a night shift in the ER when he came across an error-ridden article on Wikipedia. Someone else might have used the article to dismiss the online encyclopedia, which was then less than half the size it is now. Instead, Heilman decided to improve the article. read more

A Bundle of Tor

I don't know how many readers know this, but my very first Linux Journal column ("Browse the Web without a Trace", January 2008) was about how to set up and use Tor. Anonymity and privacy on the Internet certainly take on a different meaning in the modern era of privacy-invading software and general Internet surveillance.

Merely searching the web for the privacy-enhancing software tools outlined in the XKeyscore rules causes the NSA to mark and track the IP address of the person doing the search... It also records details about visits to a popular internet journal for Linux operating system users called "the Linux Journal - the Original Magazine of the Linux Community", and calls it an "extremist forum".

Manage Linux Containers with Docker on Ubuntu This guide explains how to install Docker and manage virtual machines effectively. Docker is a Open Source Linux virtualistaion platform for developers and system administrators to build, deploy, and execute distributed applications easily. Docker consists of the Docker Engine, a light runtime and virtualisation layer, tools to package and version virtual machines similar to a sourcecode repository and Docker Hub, a service in the cloud to share applications and automate workflow. Python Foundation uncoils as membership opens up

By relaxing its rather constrictive membership process, The Python Software Foundation is starting to uncoil. And Nick Coghlan, Provisioning Architect in Red Hat Engineering Operations, couldn't be happier. Coghlan recently earned a seat on the Foundation's Board of Directors, where he'll help oversee the open source programming language's governing body. He assumes his position at a critical juncture for Python. Many high-profile Linux distributions are beginning to offer Python 3 by default, encouraging developers to transition to the latest version as Python 2 support dwindles. And the PSF is altering its membership structure—making joining a much more straightforward matter for developers all over the world. read more
