The average phone is discarded every 2 years, and computing equipment every 3 to 5 years. They are usually in full working order, or even if broken can still be used in other ways rather than discarding.

Android and Chrome OS are currently two standalone projects which Google oversees, but rumors are flying around that they may be merged together.

Linux in the office

I work in an office which utilities many different devices and operating system, yet I only know of two places we use linux, and that's not including embedded.

When I started my current role as a PHP Developer, I was given a laptop and the general accessories, but was given the choice of what OS I wanted to use. From a linux background I wanted linux, but as the other developers used windows I went with windows.

Windows 10 has been with us since the end of July, but even with it being mostly given away for free, it does not seem to be fairing that well.

Unlike other guides, I won’t push the whole “Give It Away” or “Donate Processing to X Project”. This is more for the sort of person who does not want to let go.
