The other day I had to come up with a way to transfer a Solaris Express nv97 DVD 3G image to remote locations while not using the network. The reason for this is, I needed to perform a LiveUpgrade on over 700 boxes and each being at a different locations. So I said to myself I guess I can put this image on a custom LiveDVD... But then I said to myself, which Linux LiveCD/DVD distro will I use???? It has to be small enough so that I can fit the Solaris Express nv97 image as well as the LiveCD Image.

Norwegian members of the Technical Committee of that country's International Standards Organisation (ISO) body Standard Norge have resigned their posts to protest the approval of Microsoft's OOXML document formats proposal in defiance of the majority recommendation. In all, 13 of the committee's 23 members have resigned, a majority of the membership. In Standard Norge deliberations regarding OOXML earlier this year, only two members – Microsoft and Statoil – voted for approval, while the remaining 21 voted against it. Defying the overwhelming vote, the officials of Standard Norge went ahead and approved OOXML anyway, and transmitted that "decision" to ISO.

When your laptop battery is about to give up the ghost, you are probably thinking of the typical three alternatives. The most obvious, of course, is "wow, what a great justification for buying a new laptop". With laptop prices falling and no such luck with battery prices, this almost makes sense. But, most of us will probably just bite the bullet and buy a new battery. The third alternative would be to replace the cells in the battery you already have. This article is about the third alternative. If you are not fairly skilled in working on electronics, this is not necessarily a good alternative. But, it is possible. Personally, I was inspired to do this the first time because the small (3-cell) battery for my ASUS laptop was very ill and I couldn't find a replacement.
In a recent article on free software and the Large Hadron Collider I mentioned that here in the United Kingdom The Guardian, a national British newspaper, had founded a campaign called “free our data”. They objected to the fact that the Ordnance Survey (and others), funded by the British taxpayer, was charging business and individuals for its cartographic data thus effectively making people pay for it twice. Their campaign is great but until such times as it succeeds an alternative is needed. A free software alternative. Enter OpenStreetMaps. Read the full story at
Freesoftware Magazine.
Recently I had to write an article on Linux green computing. During the writing of that article I was sent on yet another quest to get some form of hibernate and or suspend working on a Linux laptop. This quest had me digging through nearly every configuration file and every package I could find in an attempt to get an off-brand laptop (Everex Zonbook) running Mandriva Spring 2008 to either suspend or hibernate. I was surprised at what I discovered and the results I came up with.
I could not believe that gOS 3.0 was a Linux Distro when I saw it on DistroWatch. So I said why not let me give it a try. Let me tell you I am glad I did! This distro is amazingly fast and extremely easy to use. This distro is perfect for the Asus EEEpc, especially for newbies just joining Linux or for users who are just tired of Microsoft Windows. The apps are easy to use as they are on my MAC. The fact that gOS makes extremely good use of Wine 1.0 which make it easy to install Windows Applications. The install was quick and simple, which is very important for people just joining the Linux Community. Well I hope you enjoy the installation ScreenShots below as well as some action shots.

Now Microsoft's share is down and Mozilla's share is 20 percent.
Why just say what you mean, when you can be convoluted and misleading? ;)
"Lawyers in the Windows Vista Capable lawsuit against Microsoft want a federal judge to force the company to use Windows Update to notify potential class members of the suit, according to court documents." This is the opening paragraph in an article in ComputerWorld. A number of people, including myself think this is a bad idea.
Watch as a red snake breaks open an oyster anticipating a new designer drug...no, that's not what that title means. Actually, this is a scripting tutorial of some basic methods like getopts, variable manipulation, output formatting, conditionals and functions/subroutines. Scripting languages translate very much like Romance Languages --- usually the quickest way to learn a second one is to simply translate your knowledge of the first one. A year ago, I had written a Zenoss-v1 device script in python, perl and bash for a friend to adjust to python with his knowledge of perl.

For you Microsoft Windows Users, I think I feel I finally found a Linux OS that I can say that my wife will use and not get confused..... I had her using this distro for a couple of hours and she really enjoyed it except that it is missing the Ubuntu Fire Fox plugin that makes installing plugins so easy :(. But Mandriva's Control Panel is so like Windows Control Panel so Windows users do not fret and feel safe using Mandriva.
