RALEIGH, N.C. - Microsoft's stunning announcement Thursday that it was embracing the Linux operating system through a deal with Novell produced a quick reaction at Red Hat.

Enterprises are not completely abandoning their pre-existing software programs in favor of new innovations. The move is tepid, with small outfits needing to prove themselves. "They're meeting an unmet need with a solution that augments technology they get from bigger companies," said Dan Twing, vice president of Enterprise Management Associates, a Boulder, Colo., consulting firm.

The popular free Linux computer operating system being co-opted by corporate technology titans was born of a Finnish university student and a group devoted to no-cost software. The software, and its most widely known distributor Red Hat, has open source coding allowing anyone with the skill to modify it at will.
