SqlDesktop v3.00 arranges desktops like an ordinary office: documents, spreadsheets, images, and other items are stored intuitively in folders residing in an SQL database, according to the French company.

A vulnerability has been identified in GNU Tar, which could be exploited by malicious people to conduct directory traversal attacks. This flaw is due to errors in the "extract_archive()" and "extract_mangle()" functions when processing a "GNUTYPE_NAMES" record with a symbolic link, which could be exploited by attackers to overwrite arbitrary files by tricking a user into extracting a specially crafted archive.

Then Mark Shuttleworth jumped into the mess by offering a new, Microsoft-free home for openSUSE developers who didn't want to truck with Novell any longer because of its Microsoft deal.

The Assemblée Nationale, an institution that is meaningful to any freedom-loving, truth and justice-seeking french citizen, chooses Linux, OpenOffice.org and OpenDocument on its desktops. This can be seen as a major victory in France, but although I applause these news, I am, just like many of my fellow citizens involved in the fight for digital freedom and independence quite skeptical on the progress of the Linux Desktop in France.
