Secondhand Microsoft software goes on sale in UK
Microsoft Shafting Its Resellers - Welcome to the club. Here's what they say: "Microsoft has stunned some in the British reseller community by allowing a discount dealer to sell secondhand volume licenses, opening the floodgates for a used-software market." Note that this is UK only (so far), but it just might indicate someone within Microsoft wants to stop any incipient drift away from its OS. Just guessing.
Heavily updated Camino 1.0 Beta 1 browser released for Mac OS X
Camino 1.0 Beta 1 brings you a heavily updated version of the only native Mac OS X browser using Mozilla.org's Gecko HTML rendering engine. The Mozilla Organization's Camino pages state that they have "made great improvements, adding new features, improving existing features, and fixing many bugs and performance issues."

Microsoft has always had to respond to innovators in the software business and seize the PR initiative.
Ten years ago this December, I wrote a memo entitled The Internet Tidal Puddle in which I attempted to undo the damage caused by my book, The Road Ahead, published just three months previously.
In The Road Ahead I failed to mention the internet at all. The same month, Netscape had floated on NASDAQ, creating the largest ever first day gain. Clearly, there was a puddle in the road ahead. So in my memo I warned that we could either step round the puddle, or step right into it, and risk being drowned.
In 1995 none of our products made use of TCP/IP. Now, a decade later, I can safely say that many of them do.

New approaches to Linux package management
Traditional Linux package management systems such as RPM, Debian's dpkg, and Slackware's pkgtool present several problems for users. Users who want optimized packages often have problems finding them, different package repositories have conflicting naming conventions, and binary packages are often not available for packages in a timely fashion. California Suing Sony Over Rootkit DRM
"California has filed a class-action lawsuit against Sony and a second one may be filed today in New York. The lawsuit was filed Nov. 1 in Superior Court for the County of Los Angeles by Vernon, CA. It asks the court to prevent Sony from selling additional CDs protected by the anti-piracy software, and seeks monetary damages for California consumers who purchased them. The suit alleges that Sony's software violates at least three California statutes...

Ask the executives of any IT shop that has not yet dipped its toe into the waters of open source software, or perhaps has just played around the edges of the pool, why they have not jumped in with both feet and the answer is often the belief that companies using the open source model are unlikely to have financial viability. In other words, they are afraid that in the process of offering its source code for free, a company is jeopardizing its ability to remain a going concern and will not be around to provide support over a period of years.
