Looker has released a new version of its business intelligence and data analytics platform that focuses on customizability and finding the most useful data.

Dstat is a versatile replacement for vmstat, iostat, netstat and ifstat. Dstat overcomes some of their limitations and adds some extra features, more counters and flexibility. Dstat is handy for monitoring systems during performance tuning tests, benchmarks or troubleshooting. Dstat allows you to view all of your system resources in real-time, you can eg. compare disk utilization in combination with interrupts from your IDE controller, or compare the network bandwidth numbers directly with the disk throughput (in the same interval).

Recently, the Fedora Infrastructure Development team announced the new version of PackageDB — a tool especially for packagers — was available for use. Fedora currently distributes over 16000 packages, and PackageDB is the application that manages the permissions (who can update what, who is the bugzilla assignee, etc) for packages.

After months of work, here's the new operating system, available in four editions: SalentOS 32-bit 'Full' and 'Light', SalentOS 64-bit 'Full' and 'Light'. The 'Full' edition is complete with all the software available so it can be used right away to surf the web, enjoy multimedia content and work. The live image weighs around 850 MB, it is installable and can be burned to DVD, or used to create a bootable USB device. The 'Light' edition is designed to use alternative software and programs according to the tastes and preferences of each user. It contains the base system and has only a web browser and text editor installed.

The Chinese government has banned Windows 8 from a sizeable chunk of public-sector PCs – capping off a long-running dispute with Microsoft over the company's decision to cut support for XP. The ban was announced by the government's IT procurement agency in a notice posted online on Friday. It was addressed to vendors bidding on a contract to supply the Chinese state with new energy-saving PCs, laptops, tablets and other gear.

In a move that it said is designed to “ensure computer security.” the Chinese government has banned Windows 8 from being installed on all government desktop, notebook and tablet computers. And as far as the Chinese government is concerned, any other OS will do. That, people, is a serious blow to Windows (8) in China.

One of the most controversial things that happened on the Linux Planet over the course of the last week has been a series of stories in the Wall St. Journal taking aim at Red Hat. The third alpha of what will become GhostBSD 4.0 was released a few days ago. To see how far the distribution has come since the 2.5 edition, I downloaded and installed it from a DVD image in a virtualenvironment. I’m still not terribly impressed, though I realize the this is only a third alpha release.
