Helping African hospitals with open source software
The daily management and operation of a hospital requires enormous effort. These days, most hospitals utilize Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software to centralize facility operations including inventory, budgets, invoicing, and employee management. Any hospital administrator will tell you that ERP software is essential to efficiently managing their hospital as the software lowers inventory costs and improves efficiencies and quality.
Windows XP, Internet Explorer, Security Bugs, Black Hats & Linux
Let’s face it, anyone still running XP who’s also still using Internet Explorer as a default browser isn’t the most computer knowledgeable person in the universe or even on the block. Forget the fact that Internet Explorer has never been a secure browser, XP users haven’t even been able to upgrade the browser since version 8, released five years ago.
Linux certification site sends wrong message
The percentage of women involved in free and open source software is very low. This is a well-known fact, yet the groups that should be open and welcoming are often those who, subtly and not-so-subtly, often send out messages that are far from welcoming
Patent troll cases heard by US Supreme Court
Patent trolling—the aggressive assertion of weak or meritless patent claims by non-practicing entities—is a frequent target of disdain from open source enthusiasts. Thus it may be of some comfort to readers that the highest court in the US has recently decided the issue is worth looking into. Three cases have already been heard, but decisions are, as usual, still a ways off.

Zenwalk 7.4 Live Screenshot Tour
This is the first Zenwalk Live version that is NOT using an Aufs-enabled kernel but instead running Unionfs in userspace via FUSE on an unmodified Slackware generic kernel. It will also be probably the last Zenwalk Live version supporting 32-bit systems and it's going to be very likely the last Zenwalk Live edition that I contribute to the Zenwalk project. Same as in Zenwalk Live 7.2 I decided to feature PAE for supporting more than 4 GB RAM on 32-bit systems,
Open-Source Software for College Administrators Reaches ‘Tipping Point’ After 10 Years
"Open-source is not a free beer, it’s a free puppy," says Kenneth C. Green, who conducted the survey. "If I give you a free puppy, well, you have got some significant costs for that puppy in terms of attention, care, maintenance, and support."
Rugged IoT box runs Linux on a pico-ITX core
Via Technologies has been so consumed with its ARM-based Wondermedia and Via Elite system-on-chips recently that one forgets that the Taiwan-based company was known for years for designing low-power x86 processors like the Eden and Nano. Here, Via keeps it all in the family by spinning an AMOS-3003 industrial computer based on its circa-2012 EPIA-P910 pico-ITX SBC, which in turn is built around Via’s dual-core Nano X2 E-Series CPU and VX11H media system processor (MSP).

Five Things in Fedora This Week (2014-04-29)
I know I’ve been posting these reminders for a while now, but this is the last one, since it’s also the last few days in which voting is open for the different sessions proposed for Flock (Fedora’s annual planning and development conference, in Prague this August). Fedora contributors can vote on the Fedora Elections page. Of course, it’s best if you can actually attend, but even if you won’t be able to, it’s helpful to vote on topics which you really think we need to be talking about.
