The situation is different this time.

Problem I’ve arrived at the point that I’m fed up with the passwords. I can’t memorize them all so I usually write them in an exercise book that I keep at home. But what if I need something from it at my workplace? On the other hand, this booklet is already full (with other pieces of info too), so when I need a password from it, I need to search it for minutes… Damn. It would be so nice if I had all this information in a file on my machine but in a secure way.

Solution The ideal solution is a password manager. But which one to choose? There are a lot. Since I also use Windows from time to time, I needed a cross-platform solution. First I thought of using a command line manager but finally I decided to use a graphical one; after all it looks nicer and easier to use (and I didn’t want to learn new command line options that I forget if I don’t use it for a few weeks…). This is how I got to KeePassX, which perfectly fulfills my needs. It’s also in the Ubuntu repos.

EncFS provides an encrypted filesystem in user-space. It runs without any special permissions and uses the FUSE library and Linux kernel module to provide the filesystem interface. It is a pass-through filesystem, not an encrypted block device, which means it is created on top of an existing filesystem. Scrot (SCReenshOT) is a screen capture utility using the imlib2 library to aquire and save images. scrot has a few really interesting options, detailed below. The basic usage is to specify a [file] as the filename to save the screenshot to and scrot will take a screenshot of the whole desktop. The latest release (0.8) has almost 10 years, still this small program can be useful for his ability to be run completely from the command line and so you could use it to concatenate other commands or just because it’s really lightweight and easy to use.

KDE and openSUSE developer Will Stephenson is working on a slimmed down version of KDE that he calls KLyDE, short for K Lightweight Desktop Environment. In a blog entry about the project, Stephenson says that he thinks: "KDE is not intrinsically bloated", but that most distributions of the open source desktop environment would, by default, install almost all of the software developed within the project. In his opinion, this leads to an overwhelming number of applications, widgets and options being presented to users. With KLyDE, Stephenson wants to create a modular distribution of KDE that can be reduced to the bare bones of what is necessary for a desktop environment.
