Permanent SSH Tunnels with autossh
There are many occasions where you need to create connections to machines and services that are protected by firewalls because it is appropriate to adequately protect them, but for which the creation of a VPN becomes an excessive burden. For this reason, the ability to port forwarding via SSH is very useful for creating an encrypted tunnel from one machine to another, allowing you to enable only local access (such as a MySQL only listens locally) safely, with the only the problem that in case of problems, the SSH connection (and its tunnels) could fall.
Over time, Linux package dependencies show predator/prey relationship
You'll frequently hear references to a "software ecosystem" on various platforms, but it's relatively rare to see someone take that sort of terminology seriously. A group of evolutionary biologists, however, has now used the tools of ecosystem analysis to look at the evolution of Debian releases, examining things like package dependencies and software incompatibility.

This report follows others regarding the growth in Android malware -- including a Juniper Networks claim that there's been a 472 percent increase -- but Google's Chris DiBona counters that the threat of serious viruses spreading between Android devices is overblown....

Learning Linux Commands: sed
Welcome to the second part of our series, a part that will focus on sed, the GNU version. As you will see, there are several variants of sed, which is available for quite a few platforms, but we will focus on GNU sed versions 4.x. Many of you have already heard about sed and already used it, mainly as a substitution tool. But that is just a segment of what sed can do, and we will do our best to show you as much as possible of what you can do with it. The name stands for Stream EDitor, and here "stream" can be a file, a pipe or simply stdin.
An apology to the Debian community
Yesterday I wrote an article that explained that I'd been searching for the Out Of The Box Linux for over a year to give to people as a Working OS cd to replace their gacked Windows OS. I'd been pushing Linux Mint for quite awhile for windows users because it used to do exactly what they wanted. Now it doesn't. And being a child of Ubuntu I found the bug there and submitted a report that never got a response to since July. One user replied that I had submitted my bug in the wrong area – figgers... I didn't know they had areas for different things – I was new to the whole Launchpad idea. I will re-submit it to the right area, assuming I can find it.

Elmer is an open-source multiphysics simulation software that has been around since 1995. It is developed by the CSC — IT Center for Science Ltd. This group is administered by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture in Finland. Dennis Ritchie: The geek Prometheus
Dennis Ritchie created no gadgets to entrance the lustful desire of hundreds of millions of well-heeled consumers, built no companies that bestride the corporate world like Colossus, and made no billions from his revolutionary contributions to the world of computer science. I would venture to guess that less than one-hundredth of 1 percent of the number of people who took shocked notice of the passing of Steve Jobs would even recognize his name. Time magazine will not rip apart its next issue to put the news of his death earlier this week, at age 70, on the cover. But the co-creator (with Ken Thompson) of the Unix operating system and author of the C programming language deserves more than just a moment of silence from programmers everywhere.

How to set up SSH keys
There are two machines A and B. The idea is to login (via ssh) from A to B without typing the password that machine B would normally ask for. A is called the client and B is called the server. A single command on the client A does this (replace SERVERB by the correct machine name or IP address of server B ):

Google guru blasts Android virus doomsayers as 'charlatans'
Google's open-source program manager has launched an entertaining rant against firms offering mobile security software, accusing them of selling worthless software and of being "charlatans and scammers". Chris DiBona, Google's open-source programs manager, argues that neither smartphones based on Google's Android nor Apple's iOS need anti-virus protection. Anyone telling you different is a snake-oil salesman, he said.
