Over the course of 5 months, I've taken my wife who knew nothing of Linux and put her through a handful of desktop oriented distros to see if we could shake the Windows bug. The results are contained on Yet Another Linux Blog. If you want to know what a new user thinks about distros such as SimplyMEPIS, PCLinuxOS, Mandrake (Mandriva), Ubuntu, and Fedora Core... you may want to give the experiment a read:

Tonight, we go head-to-head with the top distros as ranked previous by the experiment. Most of the readers know the premise behind the experiment and appreciate what we have set out to do. The top two new user distros as decided on by Mrs.Devnet, a new Linux user converting from Windows are PCLinuxOS .81a and SimplyMEPIS 3.3.1 (versions updated to current). We installed and test one last time each distro to allow Mrs.Devnet to experience each one before crowning a new user champion. In the following comparison, Mrs.Devnet will give advantage to one distro over the other or in the case of a tie, she will list both as winners. The distro with the most advantages will win. You got yourself a scrapper there Devnet. She took some pretty nasty knocks but I was both gratified and surprised at how hard she knocked back. At the risk of really hacking off Tuxchick, I will repeat something totally sexist I said in a semi-private blog comment. After some of the abuse Mrs. Devnet took, most women would have run away only to console themselves with kleenex and chocolate. Not this Lady...Not only did she do an outstanding job with the experiment, she snapped about 9 guys in line when they stepped out, and she was both masterful and forceful in doing so.
I do believe more than one of them may have went to find kleenex and chocolate of their own.
