[I did not bother reading the article nor MS's take on this.]

I have heard elsewhere that Linux servers are under more attack attempts than Windows, because gaining access (and perhaps control) gives a much more powerful machine to be placed at the attackers disposal. Nonetheless, it seems that despite this higher rate of attempts the Windows machines seem more likely to become tools in the hands of the cracker horde.

This sort of turns the argument on its head: that the percentage of available targets drives the attack probabilities. So much for conventional wisdom.

I see the point about gaining access to a more powerful machine, but if you're going to comment without reading, please don't flaunt it.
